Meeting via Yack Pack
Monday, August 27, 2007, 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.
In attendance: Michele Anciaux Aoki, Catherine Barnhart, Sharon Gao, Chunman Gissing, Adam Ross, Christopher Lupke
Highlights of the Meeting
1. Discussion of September 22 Workshop with Fu Haiyan (including discussion of use of State Innovations grant funds)
- Lotus will take care of arrangements to UPS
- Adam will make arrangements with EARC
- Michele will take care of online registration
- Lotus will connect with Chunman and Adam to write out details of schedule for workshop.
- Registration fee: $10 suggested donation, with a plea put on the website. It is important to keep building funds so that we can keep bringing in speakers.
- Fu Haiyan has made her own arrangements for airline flights, and Lotus and Chunman will continue to work on the lodging issue.
- Michele – how much money will we need from the State Innovations grant? We can use this for bringing in speakers, for PR costs. $500 is a good figure to start with for this…we can go up if we need, but let’s see if we can get more funding elsewhere too.
- Workshop will end at 5:00 p.m., will be too much to organize to have a whole group dinner that evening, particularly if Fu Haiyan is getting a flight back to Chicago later that evening. We will likely arrange a small dinner for Fu Haiyan, Core Team members and perhaps other key people.
- The Core Team currently has $679.52 saved in the UPS, including a check for $300 from the Northwestern Association of Chinese Schools (Tiffany’s Group).
2. WAFLT Meeting with Chinese Teacher Representation
We are on the registration form for WAFLT, with talks proposed by Heidi
Steele and Pollyanna Wang. Michele would like to use State Innovations
money to pay for Michele and Heidi’s registration, Chunman’s
registration may be already covered by University Prep School. Michele
also suggested that this grant also cover any other Core Team members
who would like to attend. Other funding from the State Grant can pay for
other events in Seattle.
3. Planning for Future Meetings
Discussion of using Yackpack for future meetings to continue the rest of
the discussion of the agenda items not covered. We are tentatively going
to meet online again on Wednesday, September 12 from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.
- Chunman will prepare some background information about the Confucius Institute initiative for review before the 9/12 meeting.
- Chunman will also talk to Michael Rawding about his role with the Core Team and possibly with the CI initiative.
- Plea from Lotus about interns from PLU certification – these teachers need placement in local public or private schools in order to complete their certification working under a supervisor. Discussion about finding a time to meet with Flo to talk about PLU’s needs and how we can best support their program.
